Private Albert Victor Marshall
Albert Victor Marshall was born on 5 November 1899 at Drumgoon, Maguiresbridge, County Fermanagh, the last of eleven children of stationmaster Robert Marshall and his wife Letitia (née Donaldson). In January 1902 his father enlisted, serving in the 131st Company, 29th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa until discharged at the end of that year. His mother died in Belfast on 31 January 1902. At the time of the 1911 Census Albert was living at Mullanasilla, Hockley, County Armagh, with his father (who was working as an agricultural labourer) and his grandmother.
Marshall enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 12 April 1917 (No.2413 – later Corps of Hussars No.71810). He gave his occupation as labourer. He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp before embarking for France in 1917 or 1918. There he was posted to one of the squadrons of the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment. This regiment served as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps from its establishment in May 1916 until February-March 1918, when it was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit.
On 4 March 1919 at La Rochette Marshall re-enlisted, in the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) (No.29864 – later Army No.390938), serving with that regiment until discharged on 31 March 1921. His military character was recorded as 'very good'. He re-enlisted on 23 April 1925, serving for two years in the Cavalry Pool of Section D, Army Reserve.
On 23 June 1925 in Belfast Marshall married Sarah Jane Nesbitt. He died in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast on 19 January 1957 and was buried in the City Cemetery.
